DEEP INTERGALACTIC SPACE

“Halo” Construction Ring (Star Force Empire outpost)

“Why now?”

Paul looked up at the long-necked metallic Brontosaurus Deebee and raised an eyebrow.

“Because I said so, dipshit. Now get going,” the trailblazer said, pointing at the lake as he recognized the stall tactic.

“I hate boat duty,” Weiss said, with ‘her’ gleaming white body stepping into the lake. Her forelegs sunk into the soft mud and she hissed her dislike a moment before her legs stuck in place and the rest of her transformed around the two pedestals, flipping over and fully into the water, forming not a bipedal robot but a barge-like boat that was flat along the top save for a taller section at the rear.

The two legs transformed last, pulling up into engines as the now Triple-changer began trolling out into the water for a series of obstacle drills. Some would have to be maneuvered over, around, and even under. Weiss hated those the most, saying she was not a submarine, but Paul had apparently constructed her to be that if necessary. Why Weiss hated it so much he didn’t know.

Some of the others had started to show odd behavior after they had begun to develop into Triple-changers. Paul was quick to stomp on it immediately, and even though he had designed them he couldn’t remember how or what he had done, so it was an ongoing mystery what was happening.

“Yang, a little target practice please,” he said, looking out at the lake while a Brachiosaurus standing behind him transformed into robot mode. Unlike Weiss, her transformation had her tail becoming two gauntlets on her forearms in lieu of the sword the Brontosaurus carried.

“Happy to, boss,” she said, being one of four long-necks in the group of 18. That was a little odd given the wide variation of body types in the others, but what Paul hadn’t told them was he suspected they had a Devastator-like mode where they could actually transform together. Their names came from RWBY, a team of four girls. And in fact only these four spoke with female voices. He doubted he had chosen that randomly, but so far no hint of combinations had manifested. Weiss was one of only 5 who had developed into a Triple-changer, gaining a third form, and hers was, to her chagrin…a boat.

Yang walked behind Paul, pounding footsteps on the ground until she came to a pile of balls and began picking them up with a forcefield and gluing them into place on her arms. When one came down over her palm she shot it out in an invisible launcher, sending it towards Weiss as she curved towards a holographic pylon near the beginning of the course.

It hit on the front of Weiss’s boat form and ricochetted into the water, but before it could roll too far a thin mechanical arm stretched out and grabbed it, hoisted it into the air, then deposited it on her flat back, also held in a force field.

“Come on, Yang,” Paul prompted. “Don’t give her easy ones.
